Robotic Surgery Q & A

What Is Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery?

Minimally invasive Robotic Surgery does not require that the body be opened like normal surgery. Access to the surgical site is gained through small keyhole incisions made by the surgeon. DaVinci surgery utilizes a robotic arm that is controlled by the surgeon via a computer. The advantage of the robotic arm is that it can move in ways that the human hand cannot and it also does not tire, making every move precise and safer. The operation portion is often clean and more exact with a robotic arm than with the human hand, especially for long surgeries. Additionally, there is less blood loss and faster post-operative recovery.

Why Type of Minimally Invasive Surgery Does Dr. Murray Offer?

Partial and total hysterectomies are performed with minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery. Laparoscopic surgeries, such as laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy or laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy, help decrease scarring, decrease recovery time, and even help to decrease the pain following surgery.

Laparoscopic myomectomy, which is the surgery used to remove fibroid tumors, is also a minimally invasive surgery. Please consult with Dr. Murray to find out if you qualify for this effective procedure.

Are Minimally Invasive Surgeries the Only Option?

No, but it is an effective one. We discuss with each patient the types of surgical options available. Many of the choices for surgery are dictated by your condition, the procedure, and your overall health. At Southern Connecticut Women's Health Care Associates, we prefer minimally invasive surgeries over open surgery because the recovery time is usually short, there is less risk of infection and less pain following the surgery. There is also less cosmetic damage in recovery. If you have any questions for Dr. Mary Murray or robotic surgery, please contact our office to see if robotic surgery may be a good option for you.
