Infertility Q & A

How Does Infertility Affect Men and Woman?

Infertility is not just a woman's health issue; it involves men too. After all, it takes both a man and a woman to start the pregnancy process. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, nearly one-third of infertility cases are strictly an issue with the male side of reproduction. What that means is for those couples, the woman's reproductive system is working just fine and that the issue that prevents pregnancy is within the man's reproductive system.

Interestingly, the same can be true for women. According to the Mayo Clinic, about one-third of infertility cases are related to the female reproductive system. That also means that roughly one-third of infertility cases involve problems with both the man's and the woman's reproductive systems.

So, What Actually Causes Infertility?

For men, infertility causes include low sperm count or abnormal sperm production. Further, low sperm count can be attributed to many issues, including genetics, diseases such as diabetes, and issues with the testicles such as when they are not fully descended. Sperm shape is also a cause of infertility.

For women, causes of infertility include damage to the fallopian tubes, physical abnormalities in the uterus or cervix, or ovulation disorders.

The list of causes of infertility, for both men and women, is quite long.

What Does Southern Connecticut Women's Health Center Associates Offer in Terms of Services for Infertility?

The first place to start with attempting to repair infertility is diagnostics. Before infertility, we start with pre-conceptual counseling, where our doctors go over family and medical histories. If infertility becomes an issue we offer complete diagnostic services that include, endocrine tests, basal body temperature charting, ultrasound, hormonal testings, and even biopsy to find the cause or causes of infertility.

Some corrections to infertility include surgery, administration of hormones, and even artificial insemination. Both Dr. Sivkin and Dr. Murray are experienced in helping couples deal with, and in many cases, resolve infertility problems.
